Review of The Waiting Room

The Waiting Room, a 31-day Devotional for Single Women Waiting for the Right Husband - T.C. Spellen

The bulk of my review was done in journalling/blog form over at my official blog: Songdove Books Presents: http://songdove.fa-ct.com/wordpress-mu/songdovemusings/ in the Reviews category.  The review below was first posted to my profile's bookshelf on Goodreads back on June 4, 2014.

This review is a year late and I deeply apologize for that!

Overall, editing was good. Layout was mostly consistent, but some devotions started on the left while most others started on the right. At least one Scripture was given for each day's reading, which was great! I'm not a fan of The Message at all, so that was a detracting point for me. Most of the habits that T.C. Spellen encourages are healthy and many of them I could relate to myself. However, the devotion mentioning exercise and dietary habits prompted me to write a lengthy blog post outlining the dangers of Christians getting involved in yoga. Encouraging Christians to get involved in spiritually damaging routines severely dropped the rating I could have given this book. Many Christians treat this issue in a very off-the-cuff manner, as did the author, and I am unable to let that pass in my evaluation of this devotional. If the session on exercise is skipped over, the rest is good encouragement.

The audience this appears to be aimed at is the Christian single lady who has, prior to picking up this devotional, a very casual, arms-length, do-as-I-please-even-if-Scripture-says-its-wrong relationship with God. This person is encouraged throughout the devotional readings to change this attitude and be more deliberate about their faithwalk, to learn what God expects of them as they relate to Him in the various aspects of life spent in the waiting room.

Many of the habits Spellen encourages have been part of my own life for many years, and I wholeheartedly stand behind them. I am not in the Waiting Room myself, but for those that are, and for those who could use some encouragement to tighten up their faithwalk and draw closer to God in the process, this devotional is worth checking out.
